How to Set Up Tubeless Tyres on Your Mountain Bike

Why Go Tubeless?

Tubeless tyres have become the standard setup for mountain biking. Without an inner tube, you can run lower pressures for better grip and comfort, and the liquid sealant inside automatically plugs small punctures while you ride.

What You'll Need

  • Tubeless-ready rims and tyres (look for the TLR or TR marking)
  • Tubeless valves
  • Tubeless rim tape
  • Tyre sealant (60-80ml per tyre for MTB)
  • A floor pump with pressure gauge
  • Tyre levers

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Tape the rim. Apply tubeless rim tape across the full width of the rim bed, covering all spoke holes.
  2. Install the tubeless valve. Pierce the tape at the valve hole, insert the valve stem, and tighten the lock nut.
  3. Mount one side of the tyre. Seat one bead onto the rim by hand. Check the rotation direction arrow first.
  4. Add sealant. Pour 60-80ml of sealant into the tyre through the open bead.
  5. Seat the second bead. Work the second bead onto the rim by hand, starting opposite the valve.
  6. Inflate quickly. Use a floor pump or compressor to seat both beads. You'll hear two pops as each bead seats. Inflate to 30-40 PSI to seat, then drop to your riding pressure.
  7. Distribute the sealant. Spin the wheel and rotate it in all directions to coat the inside of the tyre.
  8. Check for leaks. Inspect the bead and valve area. Small bubbles are normal and will seal quickly.

Running Pressures

Start with front 22-26 PSI, rear 24-28 PSI for MTB. Adjust based on your weight and terrain. Avoid going below 18 PSI or you risk burping the bead.

Sealant Maintenance

Sealant dries out every 3-6 months. Check your level by removing the valve core and top up as needed.
